Time Is An Island is an interactive story set on the Scottish isle of Ulfrey. You're a hillwalker, isolated and immobile after an accident, dying alone near Ulfrey's highest point. As you drift in and out of consciousness you see words scattered across the island -- words that flow with leylines and tell stories of others who've lived and died under the same sky over the last three thousand years. By bringing those words together you can untangle the history of this place; you'll understand why you're there, too; and you'll discover how the land links everything we do with everything that has been done before.
Time Is An Island grew from an experiment in directed but interpretive storytelling, a game about how people shape geography and geography shapes people. The player moves through a linear tale but their actions both clarify and obfuscate the narrative. Collected words are rearranged dynamically by the system and suggested sentences may be misleading (or lead to an interpretation we, as the authors, did not intend). And that's the point: games are set up to encourage 100% completion states, quests for absolute victory. Here imperfect playthroughs add glitches to the system and so to the story; but life isn't perfect, and it becomes more personal and poetic in the places where it breaks.
- A multi-chapter narrative that leads the player through five short stories and five different eras of Ulfrey
- Simple, accessible core dynamic -- most easily described as "minigolf vs. magnetic poetry" -- married with fragmented storytelling
- Different map styles, hazards and play styles for each era
- TWENTY SIX TYPES OF LICENSED ASSAULT RIFLE AND REALISTIC BONE-SPLINTERING BALLISTICS
- Just kidding
